Funeral Services

When family and friends lose a loved one, IMIEC shares their grief and help the surviving members with convening a respectful funeral according to the Muslim rites.

IMIEC volunteers will perform Ghusl (ritual washing), Kafan (dressing with special sheet wrapping) for the one who has passed away and will help through the burial process in an Islamic Cemetery. A sensitive issue many are not aware of but must be known is that (unlike the common practice in the US) a Muslim must be buried in a cemetery for Muslims (which has its reasons and wisdom, i.e., burying direction and cover). This is an issue that is often difficult to communicate to those nearest to the deceased at an emotionally difficult to comprehend stage.

In partnership with Hakim’s Funeral Home, we offer assistance and supervision through all phases of burial process including but not limited to:

  • Coordination with hospital and/or family,
  • Transportation of deceased to the funeral home / washing location,
  • Washing of the body according to the Islamic rituals and traditions,
  • Mayyet prayer at IMIEC,
  • Leading funeral procession to burial site (selected Islamic Cemetery),
  • Supervision of burial services at the Cemetery.

Important matters to keep in mind:

(i) Obeying God Almighty in blessing and comforting both the loved ones of the deceased at a very difficult time and honoring the one who has
passed away.
(ii) The burial site is purchased through the Hakim’s Funeral Home at a Muslim Cemetery.

Cost-wise, there are several items that are covered under the following services.

  • Body pick up and washing expenses,
  • Transport to Islamic Center for prayer and to the cemetery for burial, and
  • Burial site.
  • The initial cost for the burial does not include gravestones. The family must contact special manufacturers later, after the burial, to order headstone marking for the grave.
